Sean Downey | Random Rules
May - June, 2021
Shelter in Place Gallery, Boston
Shelter in Place is pleased to open "Random Rules" by Sean Downey, an exhibition of sculptural paintings that explore the convergence of our internal and external lives during the pandemic. These paintings morph and swell, dream-like narratives that arrive finally as mutated amalgamations of our private thoughts and public existence.
More from the artist: "I have been thinking a lot about the convolution of interior and exterior spaces: the indoor architecture of controlled shelter vs the outside world of organic variables. Analogously, there is the interior psychological life, nurtured by books, memories, and imagination; and the external material existence, sustained by work and relationships. These dual existences were strained and forced closer together in the last fourteen months, made to overlap and interact way more than usual. The work in this show physicalizes and makes literal a meditation on the convolution of interior and exterior, digital and analog, size and scale."
Run by Eben Haines and Delaney Dameron, Shelter In Place Gallery is a 1:12 scale exhibition space, started amidst the nation wide lockdowns and mandatory quarantines due to the COVID19 pandemic.
All works in the exhibition are acrylic and acryla-gouache on PLA 3D prints.
